Kent School Begins Middle School Renovation as Part of the Together We Soar Campaign

Renovation begins in the middle school at Kent School

CHESTERTOWN, Md. — Kent School has officially begun renovations to its Deborah C. Williams Middle School building, marking another significant milestone in the School's Together We Soar Campaign.

Work commenced on Monday, June 8, with crews removing cubbies and built-in cabinetry that have served generations of students since the building was originally constructed in the 1970s. The renovation represents Kent School's ongoing commitment to creating learning environments that reflect the needs of today's students while preparing for the future. Nancy Mugele, Head of Kent School said, “We are converting and updating existing space to accommodate two new Humanities classrooms and a STEAM classroom where students in the K through Eight program will be able to collaborate on 3-D projects, explore engineering, technology and design.”

The Deborah C. Williams Middle School renovation is designed to modernize and enhance educational spaces, providing students and faculty with updated classrooms that support collaboration, creativity, and innovative teaching practices. The project is part of the broader Together We Soar campaign, which also includes the construction of the new Osprey Innovation Center and continued investment in Kent School's endowment.

“There is also tremendous excitement for what lies ahead," said Mugele. "These renovations represent our belief that our students deserve learning spaces that inspire curiosity, foster confidence, and encourage them to think boldly about their futures."

For decades, the Middle School building has been home to countless memories, academic discoveries, and lasting friendships. The transformation now underway honors that legacy while creating spaces better suited to the collaborative, student-centered learning that defines a Kent School education.

The Together We Soar Capital Campaign reflects the generosity and vision of the Kent School community. Through philanthropic support, the campaign is helping to ensure that Kent School students have access to exceptional educational experiences and facilities for generations to come. Mugele said, “We are nearing our goal of raising $2 million, with just $190,000 left to complete the campaign. We welcome support from members of the Kent School community and beyond.”

As construction progresses throughout the summer months, Kent School looks forward to sharing updates and celebrating additional milestones with the community.
